What Are Metal Braces?
Traditional metal braces are the backbone of orthodontic treatment. They were the first appliance that was widely used and considered effective in straightening teeth. With improvements and advanced technology, traditional braces can help you reach a more confident, comfortable smile!
Metal braces have many benefits. They are highly effective, even when treating complex cases. Whether you have underbite, crossbite, crowded teeth, or other alignment issues, metal braces can help. Because they are so accessible, they are also affordable. Plus, they are customizable with fun brackets, colors, and more. Colors can be chosen that match your team colors, upcoming holidays and more. Teens and adults can enjoy choosing a custom color at each adjustment. Let traditional braces give you the smile you’ve always wanted!

Self-esteem and confidence that come from looking one’s best are two important reasons to consider braces, but the benefits of braces go well beyond pure aesthetics. Braces ensure correct bite and tooth alignment which has many positive side-effects including:
Traditional braces use elastics to keep the archwire on the bracket. In self-ligating braces, the archwire is held in place by the bracket itself by closing a small, spring-loaded door.
Although the popularity of this bracket style has climbed over the last 10 years or so, the system itself has been around since the mid-1930s. There are numerous manufacturers of this type of bracketing system.
Advantages of Self-Ligating Braces
Because closing the door (or gate) on the braces is generally a speedier process than putting elastics around each bracket to hold the archwires in place (as in the case of traditional braces), patients will be in and out of the office quicker.
There is some evidence that suggests as there without the use of ligating elastic bands to attach the archwire to the bracket (as you see in traditional brace setups), the wire in the bracket slots minimizes the friction and as such the force required to move teeth.
This in turn is believed to reduce the discomfort patients might experience. Again, it is important to note that it is a reduction in general soreness, it doesn’t completely remove it.
There have been claims made that self-ligating braces have helped to shorten treatment time by up to six months, but it can be dependent on what type of malocclusion is being addressed as well as the severity of it.
One of the annoyances experienced by the typical braces-wearer is that the latex material on the elastics and rubber bands is notorious for trapping food, and providing the perfect environment for plaque to form. Self-ligating braces eliminate the need for elastics, so those wearers who might not be as fastidious with their cleaning and flossing will experience much cleaner smiles during their treatment
Self-ligating braces come in both metal and clear brackets, so those concerned about the appearance of their braces can choose a less conspicuous route.
Self-ligating braces uses the same fundamental method as traditional metal braces, but they incorporate new innovations for more effective treatment. Instead of traditional brackets and elastics, selfligating braces use a special “passive self-ligating” bracket: a bracket that holds the archwire in place on its own, without the need for elastics. With traditional braces, the elastic ties hold the archwire firmly in place in the bracket, creating friction and restricting movement. This means that the archwire can only shift the angle of the teeth statically, often requiring many iterations of the archwire to reach the finalized smile.
Self-ligating brackets, however, allow the bracket to slide freely along the archwire during treatment. This allows for more flexible tooth movement, and combined with the advanced memory-shape wires used in self-ligating braces, gives us the ability to shift the alignment of the teeth with more precision and help you get your new smile faster. Self-ligating brackets are also gentler on teeth and the tissues supporting them, meaning treatment with self-ligating braces is both faster and more comfortable than traditional braces.
